年齢を重ねるにつれて、自分が聴いてきた過去の音源を振り返ることが多くなった。ほとんど自分のために、というようなものだが、あまり顧みられることのない素晴らしい作品についてこのブログで紹介することが、新しい聴き手をつくりだすこともあるかもしれない。そう考えて、《Songs to Remember［S/R］》の投稿を再開したい。前回は2020年6月だったので、四年近いブランクを経てのリスタートになる。
Eric Andersen、エリック・アンダースンは、1943年、アメリカのピッツバーグで生まれた。シンガー・ソングライターの先駆者で、1972年2月リリースの「Blue River」は彼の代表曲である。青い川の流れに人生を重ね、〈Keep us safe from the deep and the dark 深い暗闇から私たちを守れ〉という想いが繊細な声で歌われる。この純度の高い抒情が彼の持ち味だ。

70歳代になったエリック・アンダースンの映像がネットにあった。

ヴァイオリンの調べを聴いて、もしかしたらと思ったらやはり、Scarlet Rivera スカーレット・リヴェラだった。70年代のボブ・ディランとの共演が有名だ。あの「Hurricane ハリケーン」(1975)での音色はロックの歴史に残る。
〈Old man go to the river〉という冒頭のフレーズ。〈Old man〉となったエリック・アンダースンのこの映像とオリジナル音源とのあいだには五十年ほどの歳月が流れている。歌い方やアレンジが変化している。何よりも声が異なる。声の年輪が深く刻まれている。
Eric Andersenの音楽家としての人生の流れについて書くことができるほど、彼について知っているわけではない。おそらく、おだやかな流れではなかったように思われる。
だからこそというべきだろうか、〈Keep us safe from the deep and the dark 深い暗闇から私たちを守れ〉というフレーズが祈りのように響いてくる。
